Matlab characters disappearing on basic ArchLinux

I run an up-to-date Arch Linux system and just installed matlab. I could hardly read any text in the installer and on the complete install, whole words and any output in the console disappear from time to time. As my OS is pretty basic, I am propably missing a library that is not listed as dependency or have a wrong graphics configuration, although I checked, that the prerequesites listed on the official matlab webpage are met. Any help would be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance. PS: I am running version 9.0.0.341360 (R2016a)

I have a similar problem in Ubuntu 16.04. When I type in the console, I see the first character, but it disappears (all except a small sliver of it on the right) when I type the second. Thereafter only a small fraction of the last character to be typed is visible. Searching outside of matlab, I see some indications that it might be a problem of xorg's interaction with the Intel graphics driver. Do you also have an intel graphics controller?

Found the solution here: Arch Wiki
Basically need to reinstall Matlab against a more compatible Java version than the one from the box
