I have visual studio 2015 (community) installed. It can compile C++ fine. Do I still need the Windows SDK to use mex, or is there a way for mex to work with my VS installation? It currently does not detect a compiler. Do I need to change an environment variable, or can I explicitly supply a path to mex with the compiler, e.g. C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 14.0\VC\bin?

None of the VS "community" / "express" editions have been supported for the last several years.
I do not know what would be require to change the toolchain. I know it should be easier in newer releases; which MATLAB version are you using?

I'm using 2015a. I can't find any options that let me choose the path directly. Seems they only want mex to auto-detect everything? I asked because the SDK doesn't seem to install properly, in my case I'd have to uninstall .NET 4.6 and install .NET 4.0, then revert after installing the SDK...

Sounds like you are using Windows 10. SDK 7.1 and Windows 10 do not mix easily.
