how to choose weight (lamda)value for thresholding based intensity contrast and variance?

j(lamda,t)=(1-lamda)|(variance(t)-lamda(mean(t)-mean1(t)| i have got the value for variance and mean value.. but don't know how to choose the lamda value.. also i want to know how to use modulus in matlab code..
