Why must the delay term nk be larger than 0 when using the rarx function?

Dear Sir/Madam,
It is not clear to me why the delay term nk should be larger than 0 when I want to use the rarx function. Could you please explain to me why that is the case? How do I properly shift an input data sequence if I still want to use nk=0?
