What is the differences between Annual and Perpetual licenses

Can we renew both Annual and Perpetual licenses annual maintanance services?

I assume Annual licenses without services can't be used ("Term license")?

Perpetual

Non-Student: You can use that version of the software for as long as your organization exists (and you continue to run hardware and software that can run it.) The right to use that software version never expires. But your software maintenance might expire, so you might not be entitled to any upgrades after your service expires.

Student: You can use that version of a student license for as long as you live, but only during such times as you are enrolled in an appropriate degree-granting institution. The right to use that version never expires, but it is suspended during times you are not enrolled. If, for example, you purchased R2007b Student and you just went back to a university program now, 15 years later, you could resume using R2007b

Student and non-Student: the initial purchase includes one year of software maintenance service. You are entitled to use any new version of your purchased licenses that are released while you hae software mainteance service active. So if you purchased today (August 11th) you would be entitled to use R2022a (the current release) immediately, and your one year of included software mainteance service would entitle you to R2022b when it is released in mid-September 2022, and to R2023a when it is released in mid-April 2023, but not inherently to R2023b because that is not expected to be released until more than 1 year from now.

If you are under software maintenance, you can renew it for additional years, and become entitled to the upgrades released during the covered periods.

Term

You are entitled to use that version of the software during the license term; at the expiry of the term, you lose the right to use the software unless you renew. I believe that Term licenses include Software Maintence Service... at least during the first year... which would entitle you to use any upgrades released during the term of the license. (At the moment I am not positive that Software Maintence Service would automatically continue past the first year of a multi-year term.)

Software Mainteance Service is not exactly the same as renewing an Annual License. Annual License has to do with the right to use the software at all; Maintenance has to do with upgrades (and, for some kinds of licenses, to create bug reports.)

License Term

• This license is available for perpetual or annual use:
• Perpetual licenses provide the right to use the software indefinitely, and the first year of MathWorks Software Maintenance Service is included in the initial purchase price. After the initial 12-month period, an annual fee is required to renew your Software Maintenance Service. If your subscription lapses, renewal at a later date will incur fees for the forward service period, any applicable back maintenance fees for the lapsed period, and a reinstatement fee of 25% of the annual cost of Software Maintenance Service.
• Annual licenses provide the right to use the software for a 12-month period, and MathWorks Software Maintenance Service is included in the license fee. To ensure uninterrupted service, you may renew your license prior to the conclusion of the license term. Otherwise the license and Software Maintenance Service will expire at the end of the term period.
