How to access colormap-data of different axes in the same figure without using colormap()?

In 14b it was introduced the possiblity to add different colormaps for different axes ( REF ) . For the following example:
h=figure;
ax1 = subplot(2,1,1);
surf(peaks)
colormap(ax1,spring)
ax2 = subplot(2,1,2);
surf(peaks)
colormap(ax2,winter)
Is it possible to access the colormap-data without using the colormap() function? I know I can just use map1=colormap(ax1) and map2=colormap(ax2), but I prefer not using it in my script and rather only work by browsing the properties of the figure-handle (and its children).
Only problem so far is that I can't locate where the axes-dependent colormap-data is stored in the objects. The only colormap-data I find is the one stored in the figure-handle (global one), but this isn't what I need.
Any input is appreciated.
