Tsinghua University to Provide MATLAB and Simulink to all Students, Teachers and Researchers

Industry-proven tools for technical computing, data analytics, and model-based design of embedded systems available university-wide

Beijing, China - (7 Apr 2016)

MathWorks today announced that Tsinghua University has signed an agreement to provide all of its faculty and students with MATLAB, Simulink, and nearly 50 additional MathWorks products for teaching and academic research. The agreement covers all of the schools and departments in Tsinghua, which is frequently ranked the top engineering university in China and one of the top universities in the world.

The agreement enables Tsinghua faculty and students in engineering, science, business, and other disciplines to use MATLAB and Simulink for data analytics, model-based design of embedded and cyber-physical systems, and many other technology areas.  This will enable improved analysis and problem-solving skills through hands-on, project-based learning; improved understanding of underlying concepts and theory; and leading-edge academic research using the same tools widely used in industry. Establishing this software license reflects Tsinghua’s commitment to be one of the world’s premier institutions of higher learning and research, and to ensure that its graduates are well-equipped with the knowledge and skills to address the ever-changing needs of industry.

Tsinghua will deploy a standard configuration of MathWorks products, including English and Simplified Chinese versions, on university-managed, faculty-owned, and student computers. The agreement also includes documentation, updates to new releases, around-the-clock technical support, and on-line training materials.

“We had two technology selection criteria: helping our students and researchers maintain their academic success, and familiarizing them with tools used in the workplace. This university-wide license for MATLAB, Simulink and other MathWorks software is critical to ensuring we meet both these goals,” said Professor Xie Jinxing, Department of Mathematical Sciences, School of Sciences in Tsinghua University.  “Preparing students for employment opportunities after graduation in the world’s leading companies and research institutions, while allowing them to learn quickly and effectively, is an important measure of our competitiveness and demonstrates the value of a Tsinghua education.”

“We are honored to support Tsinghua’s efforts to offer students a strong academic foundation and simultaneously prepare them to succeed in the workforce,” said Jim Tung, MathWorks Fellow. “We are especially excited that Tsinghua, a thought leader in Chinese education, has chosen to establish a university-wide license for MATLAB and Simulink as a platform for this.”

MATLAB and Simulink product families are used as fundamental computational tools by the world’s leading educational institutions. The products have been adopted by more than 5000 universities and are used as an effective tool for learning, teaching, and research in engineering and science.
