Southeast University in China Adopts First University-Wide License

New license underscores university’s commitment to preparing students for post-graduate employment opportunities by offering advanced teaching and research capabilities

BEIJING, China - (25 Feb 2014)

MathWorks today announced that China’s Southeast University (SEU) has signed an agreement that provides all of its faculty and students with MATLAB, Simulink, and 50 additional MathWorks products for teaching and academic research. SEU is the first mainland Chinese university to adopt the university-wide license, which MathWorks already provides to hundreds of schools worldwide.

SEU is ranked as one of the top 10 engineering universities in China in the 2013 China University Rankings. SEU’s adoption of MATLAB and Simulink for technical computing and Model-Based Design further demonstrates its commitment to building a world-class engineering and science program that provides a rich creative environment for courses and academic research, and ultimately prepares its students to enter today’s knowledge economy.

SEU’s university-wide license is based on MATLAB and Simulink and includes analysis, design, modeling, simulation, code generation, and testing products for the engineering and science schools, plus computational finance for the business and economic schools. SEU is deploying these tools across the university to teachers, researchers, and students via a centralized, shared platform that increases the administrative efficiency of software management and distribution and ensures that the tools are readily available for all users.

Through the agreement between SEU and MathWorks, users will have English and Simplified Chinese versions of MATLAB and associated documentation, immediate access to new releases, and around-the-clock technical support throughout the term of the license. The university-wide license permits the installation of MATLAB and Simulink products on university-managed computers as well as user-owned computers. In addition, the MATLAB Distributed Computing Server will be installed in SEU’s high-performance computing (HPC) center. This will enable students and faculty to run computationally intensive MATLAB programs and Simulink simulations on the center’s HPC systems, and to develop new techniques and algorithms that leverage multiprocessor and multicore architectures.

“A recent SEU survey ranked MATLAB as one of the five most popular software programs among the school’s users,” said Sun Yueming, director of SEU’s Office of Laboratory and Facility Management. “Based on these findings, we knew we needed to provide a singular option that opens up this widely used tool to the entire campus. That’s why we chose MATLAB as the first software to deploy in this shared-platform project.”

“The MathWorks university-wide license enables SEU to manage and distribute MATLAB through a central IT group, and also allows us to quickly and consistently disseminate updates to students and faculty,” said Meng Qiao, vice dean of SEU’s School of Information Science and Engineering. “With the latest updates easily available and technical support from MathWorks, students and faculty can quickly move ahead in their courses and research while leveraging the newest capabilities of these industry-accepted engineering tools.”

“As in other countries, technical universities in China are being challenged by hiring companies to prepare their graduates with more hands-on and application-oriented experience, while providing a solid theoretical foundation,” said David Chen, academic business development manager at MathWorks China. “By providing their students and faculty with convenient and consistent access to MATLAB and Simulink coupled with MathWorks technical support, SEU is taking a big step to meet that challenge, enabling more project-based learning and application examples in courses.”
