Japan's Kogakuin University Provides Campus-Wide Access to MATLAB and Simulink

New license with MathWorks further supports the development of practical engineering education in accord with needs of the industry

TOKYO - (24 Jun 2014)

MathWorks announced today that Japan's Kogakuin University has signed an agreement to provide MATLAB and Simulink to students and faculty campus-wide. The Total Academic Headcount (TAH) license enables users to access the tools on university-managed and user-owned computers, and gives students an opportunity to build the skills necessary for an engineering career. The license also provides access to 50 additional specialized tools from MathWorks for a range of applications including data analysis, signal and image processing, communications, control designs, physical modeling, and code generation.

Since its founding in 1887, Kogakuin University has maintained a flexible curriculum that prepares future engineers to meet industry demands and fulfills the standards of the Japan Accreditation Board for Engineering Education (JABEE) for training international engineers. Prior to the TAH license, MATLAB and Simulink were being used as research tools, which prompted the university to consider the benefits of using them in its classrooms as well. Now, with MATLAB and Simulink in its classrooms, Kogakuin continues to strengthen the development of its practical engineering education while also meeting industry requirements by preparing its students for their future careers.

"Kogakuin University emphasizes within its education to students the importance of acquiring the knowledge and skills needed in the field of engineering application," said Teruo Tanaka, Chief of The Center for Information Science, Kogakuin University. "We decided to adopt the TAH license after noticing a shift in many industries - including automotive, electronics, communication, and medical - from the C programming language to MATLAB and Simulink. By providing access within the university environment to use MathWorks products, we will be supporting the education of students in meeting industry’s needs and also improving our campus laboratories with the latest in industry-standard tools."

"MathWorks will work with Kogakuin University on the implementation of our tools campus-wide so that they support the university's learning environment and contribute to building a skilled future workforce through its teaching and research activities," said Toshi Nashizawa, MathWorks Japan MD. "Embracing MathWorks products that already have widespread industry support will benefit students in enhancing their knowledge and skills while improving their career prospects."

MATLAB and Simulink product families are used as fundamental computational tools by the world’s educational institutions. The products have been adopted by more than 5000 universities and are used as an effective tool for learning, teaching, and research in engineering and science. To students aspiring to work in industries where MathWorks products are widely used as standard research and development tools, the company offers opportunities to become familiar with computational software. MathWorks also provides a practical arena for solving complex engineering problems by supporting student competitions. More details can be found at mathworks.com./academia/
